What is Afa divination?

Afa Divination is an ancient West African spiritual practice rooted in the Ewe and Yoruba traditions — one of the world's oldest and most precise systems of accessing ancestral wisdom, spiritual guidance, and holistic wellness. At its core, the divination connects you to the Afa Oracle through a trained divination priest known as a Bokor, who uses sacred divining tools to reveal one of 256 Odus , the sacred signs of Afa. Each Odu is a complete body of knowledge encompassing a holistic approach to wellness, entailing stories, proverbs and highly personalized guidance covering your health, relationships, career, social life, spiritual path, and ancestral responsibilities.

What distinguishes Afa from other spiritual practices is its precision. The diviner does not rely on what you share. What is the process ?

Step 1:

Once you sign up and complete your payment, you'll select a brief 10-minute phone call , your first conversation with the deity of Afa. On this call, you speak directly onto a bill of money, sharing the challenges you are facing, the clarity you are seeking, and the opportunities you wish to pursue. This is a sacred exchange between you and Afa alone, the Bokor does not listen and you are encouraged to speak in any language you choose. Everything you say remains between you and the divine. The energy and vibration of your words are transferred into the bill, which is then sealed (untouched) in an envelope to maintain vibrational integrity. Your Bokor then places it directly onto the divination mat for the deity of Afa to assess.

Step 2:

Seven business days later, you join a 45-minute to 1-hour online session where your Bokor shares what Afa revealed. Here you receive deeply personalized guidance across three pillars : spiritual, behavioral/social, and dietary/health. Your Bokor will also support you in clarifying any further questions you may have with the deity of Afa. All information from the divination is later delivered to you in a detailed PDF for your personal records.

Step 3:

From there, our team of highly qualified Bokors or priests of Afa are available to perform rituals on your behalf, working to restore your spiritual balance, remove what is blocking you, and support you in growing into a better, more aligned version of yourself.

  • Anyone with a problem can consult Afa for a divination. Afa reading is not limited to any one group, culture, religion, language, creed, race, or any other human distinction. What is important is for you to be able to comfortably communicate with the Afa diviner in a language you understand. Our team is able to conduct Afa divination in English, Ewe, Japanese, French, and Spanish.

  • When many people hear of Afa, they immediately think of the Yoruba (Isese) divination system of Ifa. Ewe Afa originates in Yorubaland (what the Ewes refer to as Anago land), however, our Ewe ancestors customized Ifa to fit Ewe spirituality, culture, and language. So while the Ifa utilizes orishas, Yoruba culture, and language to practice Ifa, the Ewe people use Vodu, the Ewe language and culture to practice Afa. Therefore, Afa has a lot of similarities to Ifa but also some distinct features. Afa can also be accurately consulted to solve problems for Ifa practitioners and priests, as well as practitioners of any other religion or spiritual tradition, and we have seen many case studies of this.


  • Our team also conducts online Afa (Ifa) readings through video calls. For remote divinations, we do two calls. The first call is a brief one where you get to speak to Afa and tell it what you are trying to find out in any language you prefer. This call is typically 5 to 10 minutes. After this first call, our diviners will do the reading and will follow up with a second call where we share our findings with you for over 30 to 45 minutes. During the second call, you can ask the diviner or Afa follow-up questions. Between the first call and the second call, it usually takes 7 business days.

  • After an Afa divination, the client typically has to perform follow-up rituals (known in Ewe as vosa - the equivalent of ebo in Isese/Lukumi) and follow dietary, behavioral, and health-related guidelines. Obtaining the intended result is dependent on following through with these guidelines, however, one should not be forced or pressured to follow through. After a divination with us, you will be sent written summaries with details of what Afa said and the follow-up guidelines.

  • Afa can be consulted anytime an individual or a group (community/family) faces a problem, but also when a person or group wants to gather insights about their well-being (spiritual, familial, health, relationships, career, etc.) routinely before problems occur. It is useful to think of consulting an Afa diviner as similar to going to consult a doctor: you either go when you are sick (the problem has occurred) or for a routine health check-up (before the problem occurs).

  • The Afadu, kpoli, or life sign obtained during Afa initiation itself acts as a personal law. Each kpoli (out of a total of 256) imposes dietary, behavioral, career-related restrictions and other kinds of taboos on the initiate’s life. This personal law defines the new Afa initiate in terms of their personality type, strengths, weaknesses, and more. During initiation, elders tell the new initiate the deep mysteries of the initiate's life sign (kpoli). Although many who get initiated end up becoming priests, initiation into Afa is not synonymous with priesthood. Some people simply get Afa to improve the quality or save their lives by finding out a blueprint for their destiny or life with customized guidelines.
